FERNANDO AVILA

I began translating health journals, AIDS research and other publications in an era, which required heavy dictionaries and constant revisions from the source to target texts. Later, I was trained as an interpreter and translator at the University of Massachusetts in Boston in an intensive program offered by the American Translators Association.

My dream was to provide better and more honest translations of Pablo Neruda’s books of poetry, but instead I took more courses in medical ease and interpretation at the Deaconess Hospital. I then began my interpreting career as a trauma unit interpreter at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital, responding in person to all night emergency trauma situations, psychiatric evaluations and doing rounds every Saturday morning in the newborn intensive care unit.

Upon my arrival in New York City in the mid ninety’s, I stepped into the legal field and found that it was a very natural transition after the pressure of interpreting in emergency medical situations. I would go on to do thousands of depositions and legal hearings, specializing in Med Mal, construction cases and anything that came my way. I eventually concentrated on simultaneous interpretation for market research and health studies, doing hundreds of focus groups in any subject matter from healthcare, to television programing and advertising.

I then founded and managed an interpreting agency for the last thirteen years. My multifaceted role included recruiting and scheduling interpreters and translators, setting up transmitters, receivers, microphones, mixers and recording equipment, managing voice over talent, as well as taking charge of all aspects of many major events from top to bottom in addition to doing onsite interpreting gigs if required. This experience taught me how to recognize the most capable linguists while forging lasting professional relationships, as well as cultivating the knowledge of how to provide the services required by clients with the highest standards.
